DJ STARTS @ 10pm
Inspired by his Saskatchewan roots, O’Flanagan paints strips of colour like objects glimpsed through the slats in a prairie fence. Shades of Canadian greats are more than present here; O’Flanagan touches on the staccato rhythm of Guido Molinari but has the homespun quality and laissez-faire palette of Jack Bush. Increasingly, the need to eliminate evidence of conscious choice has asserted itself in Canadian art, and O’Flanagan triumphs in this regard. Perhaps this is a response to his day job as a journalist which is undoubtedly heavily saturated with graphic and political imagery that is markedly absent in his paintings. Like a well-told song, these paintings guide the eye through a different kind of narrative. The title of the show, Summer Strings, relates to the feeling received in ponderance of these works; you will leave feeling taut but also warmly comforted. It’s music. DJ starts at 10pm, artist will be present at 9 until 11 pm for questions and comments related to his work.
